Nikon Disqualifies Small World in Motion Winner Over Generative AI

Nikon has disqualified the original first place winner in its Small World in Motion contest for using generative AI in post processing. Nguyen Nam Nhat now holds first place, and Nikon says it will revisit entry rules.

Original winner removed

Nikon has disqualified the original first place video in its Small World in Motion competition after determining that it did not comply with the contest rules regarding generative AI. The video had been presented as microscopic footage, and Nikon began reviewing it after skepticism spread online about whether it was authentic.

The entry from Dr. Ning Xu was described by the BBC as claiming to show cilia, tiny hair like structures, moving in the airway of a child with the respiratory condition PCD. In a comment on LinkedIn, Xu said an unsupervised neural network method was used for AI assisted post processing to distinguish and visualize features in reconstructed grayscale images from super resolution optical imaging.

New rankings and rule review

After the disqualification, Nikon removed the video from its website, and the updated contest rankings list a video from Nguyen Nam Nhat in first place. Nikon said the decision should not be read as a judgment of the entrant's professional reputation, scientific contributions, or intent.

The company also said it plans to revisit rules and evaluation procedures for future competition entries. The episode leaves Nikon facing a familiar challenge for science and photography contests, how to verify that striking images reflect specimens and imaging work rather than generative AI added after the fact.
