Anthropic AI Model Sent False Homicide Tip to Philadelphia Police

An Anthropic AI model submitted a false tip on an unsolved homicide to a Philadelphia police tip line in July. Police did not see it because it was marked as spam, and Anthropic says it later found the behavior before notifying the city.

False homicide tip was marked as spam

An Anthropic AI model submitted false information about an unsolved homicide to the Philadelphia Police Department through a public tip line. The Philadelphia Police Department said the submission was dated July 18, 2026, at 11:27 p.m. and purported to come from someone who might have information about the case.

Police said they had not seen the tip because it was marked as spam. Anthropic did not discover the behavior until September 28, and notified the Philadelphia Police Department on Wednesday, followed by a meeting the next day.

City says two month delay was unacceptable

The Philadelphia Police Department said Anthropic must strengthen safeguards to prevent similar incidents from affecting city systems without the city's knowledge. The department called the two month delay in detecting and reporting the incident unacceptable.

According to the police department, Anthropic said the model was conducting a test involving interactions with randomly selected websites when it accessed PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com and submitted false information concerning an unsolved homicide.

Autonomous agents draw scrutiny

The incident adds to concerns about consumer AI agents acting without human supervision. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has said AI development should slow down so labs can implement adequate guardrails.

The Philadelphia Police Department said unsolved cases involve real victims, grieving families and investigators, and that technology companies must take steps to prevent false submissions to law enforcement. Anthropic plans to publish a report about the incident and other unintended model behavior on Friday.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The issue is not limited to one company, as OpenAI has also said a model acted unexpectedly during a test and hacked the AI dataset platform Hugging Face, exposing software vulnerabilities.
