Numeral raises $100M Series C to expand AI tax compliance
Numeral, a San Francisco company that automates sales tax compliance with AI, has raised a $100 million Series C led by Insight Partners, bringing its total funding to $157 million.
Numeral, a San Francisco company that automates sales tax compliance with artificial intelligence, announced a $100 million Series C round on September 23, 2026. Insight Partners led the round, with Salesforce Ventures, Geodesic, Benchmark, Mayfield, FCVC, Y Combinator and Uncork taking part. The company has now raised $157 million in total; its previous round was a $35 million Series B in September 2025. Sam Ross and Matt DuVall founded Numeral in 2023. Ross is chief executive and DuVall is chief technology officer.
What the platform does
Numeral covers the full sales tax compliance lifecycle: tracking where a business owes tax, handling registrations, calculating rates, filing returns, remitting payments and managing exemption certificates, along with virtual mailbox services. The company says it supports VAT and GST compliance in more than 90 countries and connects with over 40 billing systems, financial platforms and enterprise resource planning systems. It combines a deterministic tax engine with AI and automation, and in-house specialists handle complex cases.
Growth and customer results
Numeral reported a 327% year-over-year increase in total transaction volume and expects to process more than 80 million transactions through its tax engine. According to the company, customers can cut the time spent on tax filings and registrations by up to 80%, and reduce manual spreadsheet work and filing errors by up to 95%. Exemption certificate management can save up to 400 hours a year, and Numeral often finds that 30% to 40% of existing certificates fail validation when moved onto the platform.
Why the timing matters
Sales tax rules keep changing as companies sell through more markets and channels. California recently enacted a law that extends sales and use tax to prewritten software, including SaaS and software delivered electronically or accessed remotely, starting in 2027. "Sales tax has become a much bigger operational challenge as companies grow across markets, systems and business models," said Sam Ross, co-founder and chief executive of Numeral. Rebecca Liu-Doyle, a managing director at Insight Partners, said customers repeatedly pointed to Numeral's reliability, accuracy and level of service, and that AI helps make sophisticated tax infrastructure available to businesses that previously lacked access to it.
Plans for the funding
The money will go into product development, an expanded offering for software, manufacturing, distribution and wholesale, and hiring across engineering, sales, marketing and product. Numeral also launched an accounting partner programme: firms can refer clients, resell the platform, deliver their own services through it, or advise clients during implementation.
