One year of sponsored Servo development: 1,150 pull requests and 8 new maintainers

The Servo browser engine project published a retrospective on September 15, 2026, one year after it created its first donation-funded position. Last September, Servo announced that long-time maintainer Josh Bowman-Matthews would work part-time on improving the contributor experience, paid entirely by monthly donations through OpenCollective and GitHub.

What a year of funded work produced

In his review of the year, Bowman-Matthews reports that he nominated eight new maintainers, reviewed 1,150 pull requests and filed 114 issues aimed specifically at newer contributors — 92 percent of which have since been fixed. He also wrote new documentation covering borrow hazards, experimental features, the project's AI policy, how to find things to do, and how to fix stable and intermittent test failures.

A significant part of the work was diagnosing unexpected failures in other people's pull requests. Numerous intermittent test failures were repaired, he notes, which had been making it harder for everyone to get changes merged.

Behind flaky tests and hidden bugs

The retrospective singles out several pieces of work. The maintainer supported a large-scale rewrite of Servo's JavaScript engine integration intended to eliminate intermittent panics related to garbage collection; he reviewed many of the pull requests, but also filed issues that allowed the work to be spread across other contributors. He was also called in to help interpret test failures, which uncovered broken window.open behaviour, and he made a large set of flaky tests considerably more stable. With his support, another contributor's grant proposal to work on Servo was approved.

What the donations buy

Bowman-Matthews writes that the role means a great deal to him: it let him find a healthy balance between time with his family and meaningful contributions to the project, while spending much of his attention on making Servo more accessible to others. Every individual monthly donation makes a difference, he says, and he is excited about what the coming year could bring.
