OpenAI Engineer Arrested After Recording Device Found in Executive Conference Room
OpenAI says it used its own AI models to trace a hidden recording device in an executive conference room to an employee, who was arrested and charged with intercepting oral communications.
Device Found in Executive Conference Room
An OpenAI engineer was arrested after the company said it discovered a "sophisticated recording device" hidden inside one of its offices. The device was found plugged into a TV's USB port in an executive conference room, where it was reportedly covered in toilet paper and installed on or around September 28.
The employee, identified as 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, is charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, according to a report from The San Francisco Standard.
OpenAI Says AI Models Helped Identify the Suspect
In a post about the incident, OpenAI said it used its own models to "understand the device and where it had come from," identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. The company said it fired the employee and referred the matter to the FBI.
OpenAI said it is "grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest" and that the FBI's investigation is ongoing. The company added that it has no indications the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data.
Arrest and Court Appearance
According to the Standard, the employee was arrested on Friday and has remained in custody since, appearing in federal court for the first time on Tuesday.
OpenAI said it takes protecting its technology, data, and people seriously, describing the case as an example of how AI can help address sophisticated security threats, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states.
