OpenAI to merge ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs
OpenAI is preparing to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs, starting with select users for feedback, while Codex remains separate and both services share one token allowance pool.
OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT, according to an email sent to users. The change will first be available to select users for feedback before a wider rollout. OpenAI says the combined experience is meant to let users move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in one place.
What changes for users
Users will be able to bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI said both ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool after the transition.
Impact and context
OpenAI said the token change will not impact most users, but some people may need to wait for resets more frequently depending on usage and model. Rival Anthropic merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September. The ChatGPT desktop app can be confusing because it has ChatGPT and Codex sections, with Chat and Work tabs within ChatGPT.
