OpenAI adds card and device limits to ChatGPT paid plans
OpenAI is adding card and device limits to ChatGPT paid plans, covering Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 while excluding free and business plans, and steering users toward credits or resets.
OpenAI is adding card and device limits to ChatGPT as part of its security measures. Users who link too many subscriptions to the same payment card or device will not be able to start new ones, and ChatGPT also caps the number of paid accounts per device. The limits apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500, while free accounts and Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans do not count.
What the limits do
When users reach the device limit, they see "Device limit reached," and the affected account can no longer be used on that device. Logging out of an account does not automatically free up a spot for another, according to OpenAI's support page. The policy is likely to affect users who switch between multiple paid accounts on one device to get more usage from cheap flat-rate subscriptions.
Alternatives and broader direction
OpenAI points users toward buying extra credits or usage resets instead. Those options are generally more expensive than an additional subscription. OpenAI also appears to be slowly prioritizing revenue over growth, as its move to merge Chat and Work suggests.
