OpenAI Expands Uday Ruddarraju's Role to Head Compute and Infrastructure Units

OpenAI has appointed its CTO for compute, Uday Ruddarraju, to lead both the infrastructure and compute businesses. Sachin Katti, the previous infrastructure head, will transition out and remain an advisor.

OpenAI Consolidates Infrastructure Leadership

OpenAI has appointed Uday Ruddarraju, its chief technology officer for compute, to head both the infrastructure and compute businesses, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The move places two key units under a single leader as the company scales its computing capacity.

Ruddarraju, a former xAI executive, joined OpenAI in 2025 and became CTO for compute in July. In an interview with Bloomberg, he said Sachin Katti had done an incredible job maintaining the commercial partnerships and that he now has to spend more time on the commercial side.

Katti Transitions Out After About a Year

Sachin Katti, the previous head of the infrastructure unit, will transition out of that role and remain an advisor. In a LinkedIn post, Katti said he decided to move on to build something new, that his last day at OpenAI will be Nov. 15, and that he will remain an advisor to the company after that.

Katti said the past year had been extraordinary. He said the company secured double-digit gigawatts of new compute capacity across Ohio, Portsmouth, Georgia, Trainium and several other projects, working with partners including Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, AWS, Cerebras and Coreweave. He also said the company got GPT-Infra off the ground, taking it from an idea to a real business with customers and partners in just three months. GPT-Infra is a team that partners with technical and business leaders to turn AI advances into products and businesses, according to OpenAI's website.

Broader Executive Changes and Spending Plans

The Wall Street Journal reported that Katti is leaving OpenAI after about a year, having joined in late 2025, and that the infrastructure unit has seen a series of leadership changes. The Bloomberg report said OpenAI has seen other key executives leave its teams in charge of data center capacity. Chris Malone, who helped oversee the data center buildout, left the company in August. Peter Hoeschele, who played a key role in OpenAI's Stargate infrastructure initiative, left for Meta earlier this year.

According to the WSJ report, OpenAI expects to spend about $750 billion on computing power through 2030. That projection is up from the $600 billion reported earlier this year.
