OpenAI launches ChatGPT Space, pushing deeper into Microsoft's territory
At its Dev Day conference OpenAI announced Space, a shared workspace for teams, the document type Pages, collaborative slides, and ChatGPT inside Slack and Microsoft Teams.
OpenAI used its Dev Day conference in San Francisco on 29 September to announce ChatGPT features built for office work: Space, a shared workspace; Pages, a new document type; collaborative slides; and availability inside Slack and Microsoft Teams. The move takes the company onto ground held by Microsoft, Google and Slack.
A shared workspace, documents and slides
In Space, pages and files live together, like they would in a drive. A page can be given standing instructions, for example to check a team channel. "Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive, but spaces feel alive," said CEO Sam Altman. Space is available on the Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, first on desktop and the web.
Pages is a document type built for collaboration between people and agents: users can write, research, generate images and diagrams, and visualise data. Collaborative slides arrive in the coming weeks; several people and agents can work on them at once, and they export to PowerPoint and Google Slides.
ChatGPT inside Slack and Microsoft Teams
ChatGPT now also works where teams already talk. On Business and Enterprise plans it can be called with an @ChatGPT mention in Slack and Microsoft Teams channels, threads and direct messages, without every member needing a licence.
A meetings plugin writes notes and a summary with action items into a Space and deletes the captured audio once the summary exists. It starts in beta on macOS for Pro and Business users.
Plugins, automation and pricing
OpenAI is also opening the plugin platform it used internally: Plugin Extensions let outside developers build interactive panels inside ChatGPT. Support for the proposed MCP Events specification and for Team Tasks lets plugins react to events in a connected app.
A new Pro 500 tier offers the highest usage quota, while the $200 subscription returns with a smaller API budget. "Sign in with ChatGPT" lets Plus and Pro users spend their quota at 16 partner services, and OpenAI Marketplace opens with 32 partners.
Why it matters
The announcements move ChatGPT from a chatbot into the layer where documents, meetings and agents meet. Microsoft and Salesforce spent the past year adding AI to their own products; OpenAI now ships the workspace itself.
