postmarketOS rebrands as Nura: new name, new .eco domain

The Linux distribution postmarketOS, known for reviving old Android phones, has a new name: Nura. The project announced the rebrand on September 27, 2026 in an official blog post, revealing it during the mystery talk of its own community conference after a selection process that lasted about a year and a half.

postmarketOS runs an Alpine Linux-based system on mobile hardware that vendors no longer support, keeping such devices usable long after their last official update. The rename was first announced in March 2025, but the initial process did not produce the consensus the team expected.

Why the project is renaming

According to the announcement, the old name made outreach difficult: it is long and hard to pronounce in many languages, which also makes it hard to remember. The capitalization is awkward too, with a lower-case "p" and "m" but an upper-case "OS", so writers produced variants such as Postmarketos, PostMarketOS and post-market OS. The name was descriptive as well, which limited the project's scope and made it impossible to trademark; the post notes that PINE64 once sold PinePhones with postmarketOS pre-installed. A trademark for the new name has already been filed.

What Nura means

Nura is an abbreviation of nuraghe, the ancient granite structures built in 3000 BC or earlier on the Italian island of Sardinia, many of which still stand today. The project says the deeper meaning is stability and resistance to millennia, which fits its goal of keeping devices useful for as long as possible. The name was contributed by community member Davide Depau.

The .eco domain, the logo and the vote

The project moved to nura.eco because nura.org is taken and its owner would not sell at a reasonable price; the .eco domain's strict policies against abuse and greenwashing fit the project's goals. The logo stays, with small updates: more spacing between the arrows makes it more legible from a distance, and it is now mathematically constructed so anyone can reproduce it. Nura was chosen from more than 300 community suggestions; a four-person selection team (Pablo, Pan, Ranny and Sriram Ramkrishna) narrowed the list to four names, and the team's range vote gave Nura the highest value, a mean of 0.4 on a scale from -2 to 2.

The announcement notes that replacing user-facing strings will take time, and invites contributors to help through merge requests or issue reports.
