Overdrive App Allegedly Offers Over 1,600 Free Games on Jailbroken PS5 Consoles
A new homebrew app called Overdrive allegedly lets jailbroken PS5 consoles access more than 1,600 digital games for free, including major titles like Battlefield 6 and Silent Hill f.
A new homebrew application called Overdrive is drawing attention for allegedly giving owners of modified PlayStation 5 consoles free access to a library of more than 1,600 digital games. Videos posted on X show users scrolling through a catalog of popular PS5 titles, including The Last of Us: Part 1, Spider-Man, Battlefield 6, Silent Hill f, and various editions of the Resident Evil franchise.
Overdrive acts as a spoof PS store
Overdrive functions as a storefront for jailbroken PS5 consoles and displays only the size and review ratings of each game, indicating that all of them are free to download. The user claiming responsibility for the app is Edigax, who is known online for publishing PS5 homebrew tutorials. A video demoing Overdrive received almost 7 million views within two days of being posted.
Edigax's latest YouTube video is a jailbreak setup tutorial for PS5 firmware 13.6, which helps users circumvent or remove Sony's restrictions. The jailbreaker also showed X users how to install Overdrive on their modified consoles.
Sony plans to stop making discs
The release of Overdrive comes amid growing debate over digital ownership in gaming. Sony has announced that it will stop producing PlayStation discs and switch to digital distribution by January 2028, a move that was not well received by players. Gamers have accused Sony of cementing a monopoly and turning PlayStation into a closed digital marketplace, and the decision drew criticism and mockery from major brands such as KFC and Malwarebytes.
Game preservation advocates encouraged PS users to protest the digital switch by participating in a PlayStation blackout between August 23 and August 30, 2026. According to Twisted Voxel, the protest had little to no impact on Sony's decision or the company's engagement during that week.
Risks of relying on pirated services
Cybernews notes that purchasing or using jailbroken or hacked devices is not advised, and relying on services that pirate games carries significant risk. At any time, such a service could be taken offline, and downloaded games and saved progress could be removed. The same concern applies to Sony's planned end of physical discs, which has led users to question whether they truly own their media.
