Restate lands $20M as AI agents drive demand for durable infrastructure
Berlin-based Restate raised a $20 million Series A led by Singular with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures, betting that AI agents will make durable execution infrastructure essential.
Restate, a Berlin-based startup building durable workflow infrastructure, has raised a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. Stephan Ewen co-founded the company in 2022 alongside Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann.
A durable execution engine
Restate set out to build an execution engine that keeps multistep workflows running through crashes and network interruptions. That property turned out to fit the agentic era: AI agents run longer than conventional software and take inherently unpredictable paths, so their progress has to survive failures.
“It never was built for agents in the beginning, but it just happened to be a perfect match for all these problems that agents surface,” Ewen told TechCrunch. “You need to make sure you track exactly what you do to make it reproducible and have a consistent outcome,” he said.
Contracts and customers
Over the past few months Restate has closed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts, according to Ewen. Its customers include the coding platform Replit, and the startup also serves Fortune 500 clients, including in financial services.
Instead of running its durable execution engine on top of an external database, Restate developed its own storage, replication and redundancy layers. Ewen says that architecture makes the system exceptionally fast and lightweight, letting it handle workloads that many companies treat as heavyweight.
Competing with Temporal
The fresh capital will help Restate take on Temporal, the heavyweight of durable infrastructure. Temporal, founded in 2019, announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month. Restate is a far smaller provider of increasingly important technology, but it has already attracted high-profile customers.
Founders and next steps
Before launching Restate, Ewen was a co-creator of the open source stream-processing framework Apache Flink and later became CTO of Data Artisans, the company commercializing the project. Alibaba acquired Data Artisans in 2019 and rebranded it as Ververica, where Ewen continued as CTO for three years. Ahmed Farghal, previously an engineer at Stripe and Meta, joined as the fourth co-founder at the Series A.
The company will use the funding to hire a go-to-market team, bring on more engineers and expand its office in the San Francisco Bay Area to be closer to current and potential customers. Ewen argues the technology will soon matter outside traditional tech companies: “If we fast-forward a couple of years, it’s one of those tools, like a database, that I think pretty much any company will have a use case for, no matter their shape and size.”
