Sherline Tools to Shut Down US Manufacturing; Parts and Support to Continue

What Sherline announced

Sherline Products, Inc., the American maker of precision lathes, mills, micro-machining accessories and small CNC machines, has told customers that it has begun winding down its manufacturing operations. In a message to customers, the company said it had reached "the very difficult conclusion that continuing manufacturing operations is no longer sustainable."

Why the company says it is stopping

The current owners took over the company in 2017 and invested in new products and designs, and modernized its computer systems and manufacturing processes. But, the company says, the manufacturing environment has changed dramatically: the effects of COVID, increasing manufacturing and operating costs, and significant changes in consumer purchasing habits have made it increasingly difficult for a small American manufacturer like Sherline to maintain the workforce and production levels needed to remain competitive.

What happens to sales, parts and warranties

Sherline plans to keep building and selling machines, tooling, accessories and replacement parts for as long as its remaining equipment, materials, staffing and inventory allow, through the end of October 2026. Some operations that depend on larger production equipment will end sooner, and some products may become unavailable before others.

The company says it will not simply disappear. It plans to maintain an online presence, keep replacement parts available as inventory permits, and continue to address warranty issues in line with its warranty obligations. Sherline also says it will maintain its archive of technical and educational information and resources.
