Sony will delete 551 purchased films and shows from PlayStation accounts

What PlayStation told customers

PlayStation Store customers have begun receiving notices that films and television series they bought through the store will be deleted from their accounts on 1 September. The notification was surfaced by the X user somatyk, who posted the message received this week; it links to a list of affected titles and closes with a plain "Thank you". The same warning, together with the full list of 551 films and series being pulled from customer libraries, now appears on the PlayStation website.

The same story, again

The removals follow another breakdown in licensing with the distributor StudioCanal, according to Techdirt, which reported the notices on 15 July. It is the third round of its kind. In 2022, hundreds of movies disappeared from German and Austrian PlayStation accounts because of "evolving licensing agreements" with the same distributor. In 2023, US customers lost hundreds of episodes of television after Sony ended a licensing deal with Discovery following the Warner Bros. merger — a business since acquired by Paramount Skydance.

None of the three episodes came with refunds or other compensation. Customers were told only that content they had paid for would no longer be supported.

What "buy" means in a digital store

Store terms have long stated that buying a film or series is in fact a licence to view it for an undetermined period, revocable at the seller's discretion. In practice that distinction rarely reaches buyers, who meet it only when a title vanishes from a library years after the transaction. Techdirt's Timothy Geigner notes that the announcements arrive without apology and without visible consequences from regulators or the public, which is why the practice has not changed.
