NTT Data in Final Talks to Build Anthropic's First Data Centre in Japan

Japan's NTT Data Group is in final stages of talks to build an Osaka data centre for US AI firm Anthropic. The project could cost up to 1 trillion yen, with partial operations starting as early as 2028.

Osaka Facility Would Be Anthropic's First Dedicated Site in Japan

Japan's NTT Data Group, a unit of telecommunications giant NTT, is in the final stages of talks to build a data centre in Osaka, western Japan, for US AI company Anthropic, the Nikkei business daily reported on Tuesday, citing multiple sources.

The facility would be the first dedicated data centre in Japan for the US AI company, the report said.

Costs Could Reach 1 Trillion Yen

Construction costs for the Osaka project could reach up to 1 trillion yen, equivalent to about $6.3 billion, according to Nikkei. The data centre would have a power intake capacity of up to 500 megawatts.

Partial operations at the site could start as early as 2028, the report said.

Agreement Aimed by End of Fiscal 2026

NTT Data and Anthropic aim to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, which ends on March 31, according to the report.

NTT declined to comment on the report, and NTT Group was not immediately available for comment. The Nikkei report was distributed by Thomson Reuters on Tuesday.
