OpenEvidence, the AI search engine for doctors, raises $250M at a $15B valuation
The health-AI startup OpenEvidence has raised $250 million in a new round that values it at $15 billion, up from $12 billion in January. The company could also be open to selling itself.
OpenEvidence, the AI search engine for doctors, has raised $250 million in a new funding round that values the company at $15 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. In January, OpenEvidence was valued at $12 billion. Business Insider reported the round on September 24.
Who invested
The money came from hospital systems and the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz. Based in Miami, OpenEvidence has raised more than $1 billion over the past year from investors including Thrive Capital, DST, GV, Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital. Nvidia is also an investor in the company.
What OpenEvidence does
Founded in 2022, OpenEvidence has built an AI-powered search tool that answers physicians' diagnostic and treatment questions. The company has called it "the fastest-growing application for physicians in history." According to CNBC, more than two-thirds of U.S. doctors now rely on the product for diagnostic and treatment advice. It integrates with both Google's and Microsoft's AI tools, and this week Anthropic announced a partnership with the startup.
A possible sale
OpenEvidence could also be open to selling itself, according to a person familiar with the matter. One factor cited was access to computing, which may become scarcer if rising anti-AI sentiment curbs data center expansion. It could not be verified whether the company has interest from potential acquirers, and it may prefer to remain independent.
Why it matters
The round lands as OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies push deeper into healthcare, building their own clinical tools instead of only supplying models to others. For an acquirer, OpenEvidence would offer a shortcut: doctors already use the product, and the company has experience handling sensitive medical information in a market AI firms increasingly want to own. The deal talk follows a wave of large AI acquisitions: Nvidia has agreed to buy HuggingFace for nearly $13 billion, and Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter for around $8 billion.
