Statichost.eu: Static Site Hosting Built Entirely on European Infrastructure

Statichost.eu, a hosting service run from Stockholm, presents itself as "100% European static website hosting" — not merely servers located in Europe, but, in the company's words, "a European company, European infrastructure, and European values — from deploy to CDN." The service targets developers who want static sites published without relying on American cloud providers.

What the platform does

Sites deploy directly from a git repository and are built with any static site generator. Updates can be triggered by webhooks — after a git push, after a change in a CMS, or whenever the user likes. Custom domains come with automatically provisioned free SSL certificates. The platform also offers instant rollbacks to a previous version of a site, and a worldwide CDN that is currently in private beta, presented as a way to serve users from a nearby location while supporting privacy and GDPR compliance. On the tooling side, the service says it works with every git provider and every static site generator: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Forgejo, SourceHut and Azure DevOps are named, along with Hugo, Jekyll, Astro, Next.js, Gatsby, Nuxt, Eleventy and Zola. "If it builds to static files, it works on statichost.eu," the page states.

No AWS, no Cloudflare

Founder Eric Selin frames the project as a reaction to complicated web hosting stacks: too many layers, too many vendors, and too much trust handed quietly to American companies behind the scenes. He writes that he got tired of "European" hosting that actually runs on American clouds, and built an alternative in which every layer of the stack, from git deploy to CDN, runs on European infrastructure owned by European companies.

Who uses it, and what it costs

The site lists organisations including Wir sind Plural, a design studio working for global brands such as Braun and Oral-B; the Tech Transparency Project, which researches large technology companies; FreeSewing, the open-source sewing-pattern project with hundreds of thousands of registered users; and JUnit, described on the page as possibly the most well-known testing framework in the world. Deploying a first site is free, and the company says the process takes about two minutes with your own domain. Statichost.eu operates from Stockholm, Sweden.
