Tailwind Labs joins Shopify
On September 9, 2026, Tailwind CSS creator Adam Wathan announced that Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify. The framework he started more than nine years ago is now installed over 110 million times per week and styles products at ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit and Shopify itself.
Wathan says the goal is a stable long-term home where Tailwind "will be actively maintained for the millions of people who depend on it." Shopify was one of the first companies to bet on Tailwind at scale, and it is pushing into agentic commerce — an area where interface tooling matters.
Open source stays open
Nothing changes for the framework: Tailwind CSS and the team's other open-source projects stay MIT-licensed and keep the same maintainers. On the commercial side, Tailwind Labs will stop trying to grow its paid business: existing Tailwind Plus and ui.sh customers keep access, but new sign-ups are closing.
For the front-end ecosystem it is a familiar pattern — a widely used open-source project finding corporate shelter — with one clear promise: the license and the maintainers stay put.
