Nexus Mods makes AI disclosures mandatory for new mod uploads

Nexus Mods will require authors of newly uploaded mods to declare whether AI was used in their work, with more prominent tags, public explanations for AI-assisted mods, and controls to hide AI-generated content.

Nexus Mods is making AI disclosures mandatory for new mod uploads, requiring authors to state whether AI was used in their work. The PC gaming mod repository also plans more visible AI tags, reuse controls, and changes to how mods appear in Recently Added. Mod authors have 60 days to update existing mods before enforcement begins on January 2nd.

AI disclosure requirements

Authors uploading new mods must declare whether AI was used in their work. Mods tagged as AI-assisted must include a public explanation of how and where AI was used. AI tags will also be more prominent on mod pages, and the platform is launching controls to hide AI-generated content on game pages and the homepage, with search controls planned next.

Why Nexus Mods is not banning AI mods

Site owner Victor 'Foledinho' Folmann says Nexus Mods is 'pro-human creativity' but will not introduce an outright ban on AI-generated mods. He says AI is used throughout the creation process, from script autocompletion to generation of textures, voices, and full assets, making a clear boundary difficult. An outright ban would not eliminate AI from modding but would prevent people from mentioning its use, so the site wants AI use out in the open, clearly labelled, and regulated under rules it can implement.

Reuse, attribution, and training

Folmann says Nexus Mods will not use mods to train AI and will not sell or license them to anyone doing so. The site is also working on clearer control over how mods can be reused by others and strengthening attribution when a mod uses another mod author's mod with appropriate permissions.

Changes to Recently Added

Nexus Mods is changing the Recently Added section to address mod authors uploading many mods at once, which can push other mods down the page. Folmann says this is less of an issue related to AI but is becoming more prevalent as mod production speeds up. The changes include trying limits on how many mods from one author are shown at a time and tighter restrictions on uploads from new accounts.
