Wikipedia Turned 25 as AI and Readership Decline Raise Existential Questions
Wikipedia marked its 25th anniversary in January 2026 with record cumulative views but a shrinking audience. Writing with AI is now banned, and long-time editors warn of an existential threat to human-curated knowledge.
Wikipedia Draws the Line Against AI-Generated Articles
Long before AI upended the project, Wikipedians had prepared for large language models, even hoping they would automate housekeeping such as formatting, citations, and missing links. By October 2024, a Princeton University study found that about 5 percent of nearly 3,000 newly created English Wikipedia articles that August contained substantial AI-generated content. Telltale signs included a fondness for em dashes and curly quotation marks, and occasional prompt residues left in the text. By March 2026, AI content was found to violate Wikipedia's core principles so often that writing with large language models was banned outright, with their role restricted to translation and minor proofreading.
A Quarter of the Audience Has Drifted Away
Wikipedia marked its 25th anniversary in January 2026 with a record reach. Pew Research calculated that between 2015 and 2025 the encyclopedia had been viewed 1.9 trillion times, an average of 508 million views per day. Yet those numbers hid an unmistakable arc of decline. In a wake-up call published before the anniversary, long-time Wikipedian Christophe Henner said that since 2022 the encyclopedia had lost almost a quarter of its readership, more than 1.1 billion visits per month, an audience presumably seeking out AI summaries. Click-through rates from AI chatbots were just 0.33 percent, compared with about 9 percent for Google search. Henner warned of an editing crisis and called AI an existential risk that could reduce Wikipedia to a footnote in the training data of models that have moved on.
The Encyclopedic Ideal Under Pressure
The fears echo older debates. H.G. Wells championed a Permanent World Encyclopaedia in World Brain, an idea George Orwell later dismissed as the product of a nostalgic nineteenth-century liberal, with a sinister edge. Philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre classed encyclopaedia as one of three rival versions of Western moral enquiry, alongside tradition and genealogy. The question of whether Wikipedia saves lives appears to be answered only in the probable: quick-fire encyclopedic knowledge has helped with accidental poisoning and is accessed frequently during natural disasters. As the anniversary coverage noted, the greatest threat may not be AI alone but a generational shift in how people relate to knowledge itself.
