XCancel suspends service again as X's legal pressure mounts

XCancel, a privacy-friendly front end for reading posts on X, suspended its service on 14 September 2026 and told visitors it cannot say when it will return. The project's home page now carries a single notice explaining that a new development in ongoing legal proceedings forced the shutdown.

The notice

“Unfortunately, due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings, we are required to suspend this service again until further notice,” the notice reads. “We can't share more details. You can find the content you were looking for on the original website.” The message closes with thanks for “the trust you have put into the XCancel project”, and the word “again” confirms an earlier interruption this year.

What XCancel does

XCancel runs on Nitter, an open-source project that fetches public posts from X and serves them without advertising, tracking cookies or JavaScript, so readers need no account and no official app. The model keeps X's public content readable for people who never log in, but it also bypasses the sign-in prompts and ads that generate the platform's revenue.

A legal campaign, not a first outage

The shutdown follows a cease-and-desist letter that X sent to the Nitter project in August 2026 over alleged “unlawful use and circumvention” of its API and associated data, as reported by TechCrunch. Nitter's GitHub repository was archived in read-only mode on 11 September, after both services had briefly returned in early September. This is not the first interruption: in 2024 nitter.net went offline after X introduced new API restrictions, and self-hosted instances were told to connect a real X account.

What users have left

For now, the only route the notice offers is X itself. Neither project has published a return date, and the wording suggests the dispute is still live rather than settled.
