Airbnb adds AI search and more social discovery features
Airbnb's fall update brings an AI search toggle for text and voice queries, AI-powered listing comparisons, a map built from your connections' trips, and a wider set of in-app services.
Airbnb announced its fall product update on September 30, 2026, adding AI-powered search and comparison tools alongside a new social layer that lets travelers follow the trips of people they know. The company is moving in two directions at once: offering more on-the-ground services to compete with hotels, and using AI and its own network to help people decide where to stay.
AI search, without a chatbot
The headline addition is an AI search toggle. With it switched on, users can look for stays using text or voice prompts, and the interface builds dynamic filters as they type. Enter "baby" in the search filter, for example, and Airbnb surfaces further options such as cribs, playgrounds, and children's books and toys. AI is also used to bring out a property's relevant features and to compare wishlist properties through generated summaries and reviews.

CEO Brian Chesky said the company had been deliberately cautious about the format, opting to stay away from a chatbot-like interface. "We are finally making our first foray into AI search," he told TechCrunch. "Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn't kill conversion rate, that's the hard part."
A map built from your network
The social push builds on features introduced last year. Travelers can now open a map based on their connections' past or upcoming trips; tapping one shows where a connection stayed and which experiences they booked. Those who would rather keep trips private can switch sharing off. Airbnb is also building neighborhood pages from guest and host data, along with "other sources" the company did not describe in detail. In the app, users can read reviews left by their network, add favorites to wishlists, and message connections directly.

Services and availability
Airbnb is expanding the Services section it introduced in the spring. Meal and grocery delivery are coming to Europe, while users in select US cities will be able to order laundry through Rinse or baby gear through BabyQuip. The company is also partnering on location-specific activity bookings, such as boat rentals in South Florida and ski and snowboard gear in the French Alps. The new AI tools will roll out in the US first, though Airbnb gave no timeline.
