Apple Adds M6 to 14-Inch MacBook Pro and iMac

Apple is updating the base 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac lineup with its M6 system-on-chip. The computers retain the same designs they have had for years and will be available for pre-order on Wednesday at 10:10 a.m. PT (1:10 p.m. ET), with shipments beginning Nov. 6.

Chip and AI features

The M6 in the MacBook Pro is configured with 12 CPU cores and 12 GPU cores, alongside dual neural engines for certain on-device AI workloads. The iMac will also offer a cut-down option with a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. It is no surprise that Apple is pushing both systems as AI-forward machines, using the new chips and recently released Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Connectivity and memory

The MacBook Pro can be configured with up to 32GB of RAM and adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple's N1 networking chip. The iMac receives the same networking benefits and adds a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port. Its port count depends on the chip, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the base configuration and four on the option with more cores.

Pricing and availability

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999, or $1,899 with an education discount. The iMac starts at $1,499 for the 10-core CPU and GPU configuration, or $1,449 with an education discount, and $1,699 for the full chip, or $1,599 with an education discount. Both systems are being announced the day before Apple is expected to release a MacBook with an OLED touchscreen.

Recent announcements

Yesterday, during a week of announcements, Apple debuted a redesign of the iPad Mini with a thinner body and an OLED display. The MacBook Pro and iMac update comes ahead of tomorrow's "Pro and Tell" event in Los Angeles.
