arXiv gets $17.2M multiyear backing ahead of nonprofit transition

arXiv announced on September 23 that three philanthropic organizations — Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets and Siegel Family Endowment — have made multimillion-dollar, multiyear commitments to support the preprint platform. The investment totals $17.2 million and spans three to five years.

According to arXiv, the funding will support its establishment as an independent nonprofit: strengthening its technical infrastructure, funding ongoing operations and improving services for researchers worldwide.

Three core areas of work

The commitments cover three main areas: general operation and ongoing improvement of arXiv's services for the research community; continued technical development of the platform, including work related to managing AI-generated content and other emerging challenges in scholarly communication; and strengthening arXiv as an independent nonprofit, including investments in governance and organizational operations.

What the funders say

arXiv CEO Penelope Lewis said the commitments put the organization on solid footing as it moves into its next chapter, and thanked its member organizations, foundations, sponsors and individual donors for their support. David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation, noted that over 35 years arXiv has made math and science more open, accessible and collaborative, and that independence will position it to modernize its systems and secure its future.

Simon Coyle, head of philanthropy at XTX Markets — which, together with founder Alex Gerko, has supported arXiv for two years — said that with rapid AI advances driving change across academia, robust infrastructure for open science is more valuable than ever. The Siegel Family Endowment described open access to knowledge as a cornerstone of a healthy research ecosystem.

For three and a half decades, arXiv has been a trusted venue where researchers share and access scientific findings, serving millions of users annually. Its scope spans physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. The new commitments build on earlier philanthropic support and supplement arXiv's membership program, sponsors, affiliates and individual donations.
