Codex comes to the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview

OpenAI has published a preview of the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux. The release, announced on the OpenAI Developer Community forum on August 11, brings ChatGPT, Work and Codex together in a single native desktop experience and invites early users to share feedback in the thread.

Supported systems and packages

The preview currently supports Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, on x64 and ARM64 architectures, shipped as .deb and .rpm packages. The app is designed as a workspace for managing projects, working with files, using browser workflows and running Codex alongside ChatGPT, with the official documentation covering the desktop experience in more detail.

Early user reaction

In the thread, one member asked for a feature sheet comparing the Windows and Linux versions, while another complained that the download page only exposes the installer for the operating system it detects, so fetching a Linux package onto a virtual machine from another platform is awkward. OpenAI says the thread is the place to report installation experience and further feedback.

What the preview means

Linux is a widely used platform among developers, and a native desktop client gives them the same combined ChatGPT and Codex workspace already offered for Windows and macOS. As a preview, the build may change before general availability, and the current package matrix is limited to five distribution releases in two formats.
