Deezer to add toggle letting users filter out AI-generated music

Deezer is developing a toggle that will let users filter out AI-generated music, albums and related artists from search results. The streaming company says the option will arrive before the end of the year in response to clear user demand.

Deezer plans filter for AI-generated tracks

Deezer is working on a new toggle that will let users filter out AI-generated music uploaded to its platform. The company said the feature is expected to be available before the end of the year.

According to Deezer, turning on the toggle will stop users from seeing AI-generated tracks, albums and related artists in search results.

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the company has seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music. He said Deezer is now giving everyone the option to remove this content completely from their streaming experience and focus only on human creators and creations, if they wish. He added that the explosion of AI music on the platform was one of the catalysts for the toggle-based features.

Platforms take differing stances on AI uploads

Deezer cited a survey from last year that found around 45% of its customers wanted a way to remove AI music from their feeds. The company added AI-detection tooling last year and has been reporting on the number of tracks uploaded to the platform since then.

At that time, AI-generated tracks represented 10% of daily uploads. In July, the company said more than 50% of daily uploads were AI-generated tracks, with an average of 90,000 tracks per day.

Other music streaming services have also created policies for AI music. Bandcamp has completely banned AI tracks, while Tidal cut off monetization for people uploading AI music. Spotify has taken a leaner stance and only tags AI tracks and artists more prominently. In August, Variety reported that Apple Music was looking to label AI tracks by the end of the year.

Besides platform-based tagging, users are also turning to independent tracking systems to identify AI music.
