Qualcomm brings Linux support to Snapdragon X2 Series

Qualcomm announced at Snapdragon Summit 2026 that its Snapdragon X2 Series processors are adding Linux support — a third operating system alongside Windows and Googlebook. The company is upstreaming core Snapdragon X2 Series drivers, including the Hexagon NPU and Adreno GPU, into the Linux kernel to open the platform up to developers and partners.

Which distributions come first

Qualcomm is starting with two Linux-based systems. Debian, one of the most influential distributions and the foundation behind many others, gets support by the end of this year. For Ubuntu, Qualcomm Technologies has partnered with Canonical, with Snapdragon X2 Series certification targeted for the first half of 2027.

Device makers are preparing as well: according to the company, HP, ASUS and HUMAIN plan Linux support for their devices in early 2027.

What it means for developers

Adding Linux gives developers and partners a broader range of PC environments to build agentic AI experiences on Snapdragon. The demos shown at the summit illustrated what the platform can do locally: AnythingLLM with ON1 Photo RAW for searching and organizing large photo libraries, Clairvoyance AI routing work across multiple models, Deepgram transcribing podcasts in real time, and Pokee with Halo protecting video conferences from deepfakes.

Ecosystem momentum and new devices

According to Qualcomm, more than 120 retail partners and over 12,300 stores now sell Snapdragon-powered PCs; more than 13,000 businesses have tested or deployed them, and over 7,300 applications run on the platform.

The summit also brought new hardware: Microsoft's Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch on Snapdragon X2 Plus (on-device AI processing up to 80% faster and GPU performance up to 55% better than the previous generation), the HP Googlebook 14, the Dell XPS Googlebook, the Lenovo IdeaPad Vibe, and the HUMAIN Horizon Ultra — the latter built on Snapdragon X2 Elite and running software developed for both Linux and Windows.
