Meta and Microsoft Curb Employee Use of Claude AI Tools
Meta and Microsoft are reducing employee reliance on Anthropic's Claude AI, shifting staff toward in-house coding tools as internal spending limits tighten and competition with Anthropic grows.
Microsoft Cuts Internal Claude Budgets
Meta and Microsoft have begun significantly reducing employee use of Anthropic's Claude AI as both companies pivot toward their own proprietary coding tools, according to a report published on October 5 by The Information. The change affects internal spending and workforce processes, while customer access to Claude through Microsoft's offerings remains in place.
Microsoft had previously expected internal spending on Anthropic technology to exceed $1 billion annually. That estimate has fallen by more than a third after management directed employees to curtail Claude use and adopt Microsoft tools such as GitHub Copilot and OpenAI frameworks. Within Microsoft's cloud and AI division, monthly AI spending limits have reportedly been cut from $100,000 per employee to about $10,000 in most cases. The figures represent spending ceilings rather than actual employee expenditures.
The reduction in budgetary flexibility has disappointed several engineers who previously had broader latitude to explore models. At the same time, Microsoft has not withdrawn Claude from client-facing products, and customer spending on Anthropic models through Microsoft's enterprise platforms continues to rise.
Meta Moves Developers to MetaCode and Muse Code
At Meta, the number of Claude Code users reportedly fell from around 60,000 earlier this year to about 30,000. While layoffs contributed to the decline, the report attributes the primary cause to Meta's strategic shift toward its own AI solutions, including MetaCode and Muse Code, which are built on Meta's proprietary models.
MetaCode is said to have more than 30,000 internal users, while Muse Code has over 6,000 employee users. Meta began external testing of Muse Code with clients in August. Despite the user decline, Meta reportedly allocated over $105 million to Claude Code over a 28-day period, showing that fewer users does not necessarily mean lower spending.
Security Concerns Persist Across AI Coding Tools
For cybersecurity teams, switching coding assistants does not eliminate the risks tied to automated access to sensitive files, commands, and credentials. Previous analyses by Cybersecurity News identified vulnerabilities in Claude Code that could allow unauthorized execution and API key theft. Anthropic fixed the flaws before they were publicly disclosed.
Microsoft's offerings have faced similar concerns. The remedied RoguePilot vulnerability showed how malicious commands embedded in a GitHub Issue could enable takeover of repositories. Such incidents underscore the importance of strict permissions, trusted project settings, and careful review of AI-generated actions.
Anthropic's reported annualized revenue pace of $65 billion reflects continued demand for its services. The retrenchment at Meta and Microsoft illustrates tightening budgets and intensifying competition rather than an end to engagement with Claude.
