Microsoft's new Copilot agents get their own email, calendar and org chart seat

Microsoft announced what it calls its biggest Copilot update to date on Friday. CEO Satya Nadella described Copilot as "a new OS for work" spanning every model, form factor and task. The release brings together Home, Code, Autopilot and a new managed runtime. Home and Code roll out first through the company's Frontier early-access program, while Autopilot moves to a private preview at the end of the month.

Agents that do not need prompts

Autopilot takes a role and a goal from the person who sets it up, then keeps working in the background without a fresh prompt for every step. Each Autopilot receives its own governed Entra identity and agent user account, separating its permissions and activity from those of the employee who created it. That moves much of the scaffolding long-running agents need into Microsoft 365; independent vendors such as Diagrid build similar durable-recovery layers for agent frameworks.

An identity for every agent

Autopilot agents in Microsoft Foundry, in public preview since June, get a full Entra Agent ID account with a productivity license: their own email, calendar, OneDrive storage, Teams access and a place in the org chart. Because the account sits on the agent identity every Foundry agent carries, an Autopilot acts as itself rather than on behalf of a user, so developers no longer need shared service accounts or borrowed credentials. A developer builds an Autopilot blueprint from a Foundry-hosted agent; it appears in the Agent 365 registry once an administrator approves it, and employees can then use instances of that agent in Teams. Administrators still control which resources and data each instance may reach.

Code, runtime and costs

Code, built on the same technology as GitHub Copilot, generates apps, dashboards and workflows from natural language, and the results run on Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant boundary under IT governance. Lovable is an early partner: its apps run in a Microsoft tenant "the same way everything else does," with the same sign-in and policies. Long-running agents also change the economics, since Cowork, Code and Autopilot are billed by usage through Copilot Credits, and Microsoft is extending Agent 365 cost management to Code and the runtime.

The portability trade-off

The convenience has a price: the more infrastructure a team hands to Microsoft, the harder the agent is to move elsewhere. The models are not locked in, since Copilot runs on OpenAI and Anthropic models with more promised, and the Agent 365 SDK adds governed Model Context Protocol access. Those open interfaces cover only part of an agent's architecture.
