OpenAI Releases 722 AI-Written Math Manuscripts, Mistral Previews Le Chonk, Apple Taps LG for Smart Home

OpenAI published 722 math manuscripts from an unreleased internal model, including partial progress on the Riemann hypothesis. Mistral previewed its 1T-parameter Le Chonk model, and Apple is co-developing smart home devices with LG.

OpenAI Publishes 722 Math Manuscripts From Unreleased Model

OpenAI has released a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model, publishing 722 manuscripts organized into 372 families in a GitHub repository. The company says the work was done with its internal Pro AI model, averaging about three hours per problem, with nearly all results coming from a single prompt to one AI agent, though some may have taken multiple attempts.

The release includes partial progress on several famous open problems. Among the claims are a zero-free strip for the Riemann zeta function, described as a quasi-Riemann hypothesis result, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for CM abelian varieties, and work related to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. Other claimed results include the Kakeya problem in 4-D, a claimed proof and Lean formalization of the Unique Games Conjecture, and a matrix multiplication exponent of no more than 2.25, improving on a previous record of about 2.37. According to one analysis cited in the discussions, the list claims to fully solve 90 of the top 500 open problems in mathematics.

OpenAI says it consulted with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study. The results have not yet been confirmed by outside mathematicians. Sam Altman said, "We are entering a new era of discovery now." Mathematician Terence Tao commented that the field is moving from "Math 1.0," which prized being first to solve a problem, toward a "Math 2.0" that values mathematical progress more holistically.

Mistral Previews Le Chonk, a 1T Parameter Model

Mistral has launched a preview of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk," a 1 trillion parameter model the company says tops any open model developed in the US or Europe. The model's weights are due October 27, according to VentureBeat.

Apple and LG Team Up on Smart Home Devices

Apple is preparing a major smart home reboot through an unusual partnership with LG Electronics. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the companies are co-developing a doorbell, deadbolt lock, thermostat, indoor camera, outdoor camera, floodlight camera, and more, to rival Amazon and Google. The products will carry the LG brand, with LG handling manufacturing and product support.

The accessories are meant to outfit Apple's new smart home ecosystem, with a smart home hub, a new HomePod mini, and an updated Apple TV, all with Siri AI, at the center. The products are at least a few months away, with an announcement expected around October 13. LG has not made smart home devices in over a decade, so the deal marks a big return to the market for the company. Apple's own privacy-centric home camera and sensor are said to be coming next year, separate from the LG-built cameras.
