Patreon co-founder Sam Yam is joining OpenAI to lead Creator Product

Sam Yam, who co-founded Patreon and has served as its president and chief technology officer, said in a post on X on Wednesday that he is joining OpenAI to lead Creator Product. Yam described the move as a new chapter more than 13 years after he started building Patreon.

He is not going alone. Drew Rowny, Patreon's now-former head of product, and Shannon Ma, its now-former head of engineering, are moving with him. "We're going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities," Yam wrote.

A product team, not a model team

The announcement frames the work as product-focused. In the same thread Yam wrote that he loves creators and their "relentless dedication to the craft", and that he is inspired by their willingness to take risks and stay true to themselves. "I believe human creativity is paramount," he added.

He invited people who want to learn more to reach out, and pointed to OpenAI DevDay, which he said takes place next week, as something to watch. No schedule, pricing or feature list for the promised creator tools has been announced.

Thirteen years of Patreon

Yam's departure was confirmed by his Patreon co-founder Jack Conte in a message to creators. Conte wrote that the two met in college and were roommates, and that Yam was the first person he called when he began sketching an idea for a site where fans could support artists directly.

According to Conte, they settled on the name Patreon within about an hour, and Yam started coding the same night. He built a working first version in roughly two and a half months, and Patreon.com launched on May 7, 2013. For about nine months he was the company's only engineer. Thirteen years on, Conte wrote, fans have paid creators more than $10 billion through the platform, and creators earn more than $2 billion a year.

What the hire signals

The appointment says something about OpenAI's consumer ambitions: the company is assembling a product organization aimed at the people who make and distribute creative work, staffed with three executives who spent years running product and engineering at the largest direct-to-fan membership platform.

For creators, the open question is what tools arrive and on what terms — early access has been promised, but no schedule, pricing or features have been named. For OpenAI, adding a well-known creator-economy team suggests it sees individual creators and their communities as a product surface rather than only a set of API customers.
