SpaceXAI Backs Controversial Linux Distro Omarchy With $1.5 Million in Compute

SpaceXAI is joining the Omacom Foundation as a Founding Corporate Patron and donating $1.5 million worth of Grok tokens to David Heinemeier Hansson's Omarchy Linux distribution.

SpaceXAI donates $1.5 million in Grok tokens

SpaceXAI is joining the Omacom Foundation, the organization that oversees the Omarchy Linux distribution, as a Founding Corporate Patron. The company announced it will donate $1.5 million worth of Grok tokens to the Linux project created by David Heinemeier Hansson.

According to Hansson's blog post announcing the partnership, the tokens will primarily be used to accelerate development, review code, and patch bugs.

A partnership of two controversial tech figures

Hansson is the Danish entrepreneur known for creating Ruby on Rails and co-founding the company behind Basecamp. He is also becoming known for promoting anti-immigration policies through racist blog posts. In a July post, he compared immigrants to wolves and wrote, "When wolves get out of control, you shoot them."

The Verge described the combination of Grok and Omarchy as a marriage that aligns two controversial tech leaders, linking Hansson's distro with the AI company tied to Elon Musk.

Earlier corporate backers faced criticism

Corporate contributions to Omarchy have drawn backlash before. 1Password previously found itself in hot water for contributing to the distribution, as has Cloudflare.

When asked about its contributions to Hansson's Linux distro by Nilay Patel on the Decoder podcast, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said he didn't think it was his job to "police different people's political beliefs."
