ChatGPT mobile app gets voice-based agentic features

OpenAI announced on Wednesday that ChatGPT's voice mode now handles agentic tasks on mobile, letting users trigger workflows such as drafting a document or summarizing email just by talking to the app.

Work tab on the phone

For Plus and Pro subscribers, the update brings the Work tab to mobile, where documents can be created, emails drafted and Slack messages summarized by voice, alongside site building, presentations, the cloud browser and other areas such as finances inside ChatGPT. Free and Go users get to work with plugins and connected apps.

Voice requests are no longer limited to simple questions: ChatGPT can look up calendar events, send emails and even spot and cancel duplicate charges in finance apps, while a demo video shows everyday scenarios such as weather lookups and online shopping.

A new voice stack

The capabilities run on OpenAI's GPT-6 models — Astra, Sol and Luna — and give voice conversations richer text output, plus access to plugins including email, calendar and Slack for the first time. Users can switch between text and voice in the same thread, and work started on a phone can be picked up on a desktop.

Voice also works in ChatGPT Work on web and mobile, where documents, presentations and spreadsheets can be built by talking. OpenAI says the features are available now in the latest version of the app.

Handoff between devices becomes a battleground

The rollout follows July's launch of GPT-Live, a conversational model that later reached the desktop app, where it was used to complete tasks in the Work tab or build apps in the Codex tab. Extending the same behavior to phones raises the stakes against rivals: Anthropic recently simplified handoff between mobile and desktop and merged Cowork and Chat into one interface, while OpenAI continues to keep chat and workspaces separate.

OpenAI has framed voice as a step toward an everyday assistant of the kind depicted in the film "Her", a reference chief executive Sam Altman first cited back in 2024, when the original ChatGPT Voice launched.
