MongoDB CEO resigns immediately to lead Meta's new enterprise platform; stock drops 20%

Meta Platforms said on Monday that it had appointed MongoDB chief executive Chirantan "CJ" Desai to lead a new unit that brings the social network's AI tools to corporate customers. MongoDB shares fell 20% in premarket trading after the database company said its CEO would step down effective immediately.

An exit after less than a year

Desai took over as president and CEO in November, succeeding Dev Ittycheria, who had run MongoDB for 11 years. The board has brought Ittycheria back as interim president and CEO and has retained an executive search firm to help find a permanent successor.

MongoDB said its business remains strong and reaffirmed the guidance for the third quarter and for fiscal 2027 that it issued on September 1. Under Ittycheria's earlier tenure, annual revenue grew from roughly $35 million to more than $2.3 billion. An investor day scheduled for September 29 at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York will now be led by an interim chief executive.

What Meta is building

Desai joins Meta as chief enterprise platform officer, a newly created role, and will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta said the new Meta Enterprise Platform will bring its models, agents and tools to businesses, starting with the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent and coding tools. Zuckerberg said the unit will draw on strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure and years of experience working with businesses.

MongoDB supplies database software that companies use to build and run applications, including tools for data management, search, analytics and AI.

Why it matters

For MongoDB, a second change at the top in less than a year leaves the board searching for a permanent leader while it repeats its financial outlook. For Meta, the hire is a further step into enterprise AI, a market where OpenAI, Anthropic and Google already compete for corporate customers.
