Ruby on Rails creator DHH says he no longer writes code by hand

David Heinemeier Hansson, co-founder of Basecamp and creator of Ruby on Rails, says he has stopped writing code by hand. He announced the move during an emotional keynote at the Rails World 2026 conference.

According to his own account, the last code he wrote manually dates back to around March 2026, after 25 years as a professional programmer. Just over a year ago DHH was openly pushing back against AI-assisted coding, which makes his current position a sharp reversal in the eyes of the industry.

The economic argument

In DHH's view, manual coding no longer makes economic sense for most programmers and companies, and by the end of the year that will apply to practically every domain. "English is a better programming language than Ruby," he told the audience.

From programmers to "professional makers of things"

Rather than mourn the shift, DHH framed it as the start of a new career. In his words, programmers will become "professional makers of things" steering "intelligence that was only available in science fiction up until a few moments ago."

Architecture without a blueprint

He also argued that software architecture needs rethinking: traditional abstractions lose value when AI agents are the ones changing the code. "No one yet has the blueprint," DHH said. "You get to be there right now as we're defining these things." He called the shift "the biggest thing that has happened in the history of computing."

His turnaround shows how the AI coding debate has moved in 2026: the open question is no longer whether AI writes code, but how teams should organize their work around agents that do.
